Happy Birthday to Superman!

No, not that Superman.......................

This one... The real one!

It's his beepty-beepth birthday today. (I'd tell you his age, but why make him cry? On birthdays we must keep things happy, or it'd have to be called "Sad Birthday", and there just aren't enough syllables in 'sad' to make the song work!)

Anyhoo, tradition around here is that the one whose happy birthday it isn't, must get up and brew the birthday coffee and bring it to the happy recipient, while they remain cozily waiting under the warm covers, to be served on this special day of theirs.

Well, this morning, Birthday Boy popped out of bed before me. Is it my fault he didn't wait, as tradition deemed? I heard him in there, banging around in the kitchen, but since I had tried to sing Happy Birthday to him three times that morning - all met with a totally unbirthday tune - "Shhhh...I'm trying to sleep!" - I decided to wait it out.

It was pretty funny. He had gotten the coffee humming along, then he padded back to our bedroom, armed with a candy wrapper. Standing right next to the bed, he began making as much racket with crinkling that paper as he could, trying to make me get up. It was pretty darn comical, but I bit my tongue to keep the laughter from pealing out, and scrunched my eyes shut tight, totally ruining his fun. (It was amazing how long he kept at it!) When he finally gave up and hopped in the shower, then I got up. Sometimes a gal's just gotta do what a gal's just gotta do.

But then, as is tradition, I went over to the china hutch and reached for the bright red Happy Birthday mug, filled it to the brim, and delivered his birthday coffee, complete with song.

(Notice: I must celebrate, too, so I filled a birthday tea cup for my coffee! It's the little things that make life funner!)

Anyhoo, after breakfast I followed him around, singing every song about birthdays that I could think of: Sixteen Candles, and that one the Beatles sang, "You say it's your birthday, well, happy birthday to-oo- you", etc. And we must remember that it's the thought that counts, because my voice is not like Celine Dion's, but more like Cameron Diaz in My Best Friend's Wedding.

Oh, and I have to finish up with this: I found my family's old, plastic Happy Birthday sign! All the years of my kids' birthdays I'd tape up this cheap little banner. We loved it! But then one day it disappeared. But, thanks to those little pink slips in my darling white bowl, the winner was "Clean out the drawers in hutch". And there, in the very back of the very last drawer, was the banner, that had been AWOL for ten whole years! Won't the kids be surprised when it greets them like a long, lost friend at Superman's birthday dinner!

Traditions are like glue, they hold your memories together!

"Thus says the LORD, "Stand by the ways and see and ask for the ancient paths, Where the good way is, and walk in it; And you will find rest for your souls..." Jeremiah 6:16.

I thought, when you said " a gals gotta do, what a gals gotta do..." meant you jumped in the shower with him. LOL!!! I thought "TMI liz!" I know... funny :) He'd probably liked that too... Lol.
