Let Your Little Light Shine!

I love Christmas and everything about it!

Hoping you are willing to chime into the spirit of it a bit early with me, let's do a craft! It's so simple you can make it in the time it takes you to sip your Starbucks' Eggnog Latte. Oooh, let's go get one!

What we will make is the candle holder in the picture above. Yesterday I drove up to Shannon's little town and had a blast at her church's annual women's ministry fundraising
Christmas Tea. It is now going to be my new tradition!

Each table was decorated by the Hostess-of-the-Table. As our speaker noticed, the tables were each unique, like each of us women! I liked that. It made me feel okay to be who I am, just how God made me. That's important for us women, who are prone to comparisons, to know that our gifts and talents, though different from other women's, are uniquely ours for the purposes of God! Yay!

Anyhoo, the theme was Light of the World so I thought it was a perfect time to show you how to make these little candle holders. Really, you will be happy how little time and money they take. AND WITH COUPONS AND SALES, THE RIBBON AND CANDLES WERE VERY CHEAP!

These make darling gifts! Just click on the picture below and you can read (or print) the instructions. Merry crafting!

"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world.
Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Several birthdays ago, my friend Laurie sent me lots of fun stuff in the mail (she does every October!!!). Included, was this darling homemade tag! God did not hold back in filling her to full with artsy creativity; He just dumped His whole bag on her, practically!!!

All Kinds of Ideas

I love giveaways,
and wish I could win them all.
Really, I do!

But this book... ummm, whether I win it or buy it, simply must be in my sewing room, cheering me on!
You all know how I love ...
.dots...
.
and red (& pink)
and did you know that my mom's name was Ruby,
and that dad called her 'Ruby Lips'?
So, it fits!
:)

Sew....

The Bible tells us,"So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people..." (Galatians 6:10a).

Here, I have the opportunity to do YOU good by telling you where to go for YOUR chance to win this fun book: Hop here, to leave a lovely comment for Sheri and be entered into her fabulous giveaway! Good luck!!!

Now...

I have all kinds of ideas that also will do you good, with your sewing projects!

1. Use your old pajamas (my beloved nightie was so worn the fabric finally shredded apart) to make a pattern for some new ones! (For the photo, I had to stand on my bathtub edge and snap a picture of me in the mirror.)

2. Use ribbon (non-wired) instead of bias tape! All you have to do is fold it in half, with the back side a tad longer than the front side, to ensure you catch all the seam.

3. When needing to keep tabs on your pattern pieces, such as which side is the front or back, write it on scraps of freezer paper and press it on. It peels right off when your project is finished, and you don't have to watch for sharp poking pins!

4. When you're sewing, that means you are NOT in the kitchen using your cookbook holder. So, go get it and put it in front of your machine as a quilt book holder (and perhaps, soon, a
....VERY SPECIFIC QUILT BOOK....).

And that sews up this day's post!

Do good to someone today,
just because you can!

In A Jam?

When you are in a jam, what do you do?

Over the weekend, I was in a bit of a sticky situation, and I let it get the best of me. When it was all over and my sight was then 20/20, I wished that I would have trusted the Lord. Not trusting was like making a batch of jam and letting it burn!

There are so many sticky situations in life, that we can get stuck in them if we don't trust the Lord.

Well, I found this perfect verse for when we get in a jam:

"The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him" (Nahum 1:7).

Our Friday morning Bible study is going through the book of Mark, and as I was reading verse 45 of chapter six, this portion of the verse hooked my attention...

"Then He saw them straining at rowing, for the wind was against them."

... He saw ...
His eye is on us!

... He saw them straining ...
His eye is on our struggle!

... He saw them straining at rowing ...
He knows the what the struggle is!

... For the wind was against them ...
He knows what we're up against!

When those straining disciples finally saw Jesus, He said to them, "Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid" (vs. 50).

That really seemed like a funny thing to say in the midst of straining and struggles and fear. Being of good cheer was definitely the opposite of my bad mood in my own little jam.

And that is one reason why the winds of life are necessary - to teach us to live opposite!

Opposition blows our way so that we blow God's way -- learning to have faith instead of fear, trust instead of straining, good cheer instead of bad moods, dependence on Him instead of self-sufficiency.

Anyhoo, those are some lessons I learned this weekend about jams!

And so... with jams on my mind, I yanked from the freezer all the collected strawberries from summer. I had enough berries to make two batches, which I love to give away as small gifts during Christmas. However, I only had enough empty jars and sugar for one batch of jam! Phooey! So, for the first time ever I made a Strawberry Pie! Oh, yes, I did. Superman loved it!!!

The recipe I used was from here.

One handy trick I learned long ago was to roll my crust around my rolling pin, to get it off the bread board and into my dish. Like this...

Then, after the crust was all gently tucked into the lightly greased dish, I poked air holes in the crust, like I was taught.

Trouble is, the crazy crust shrank!

CAN ANYBODY HELP ME?

If you are a pie maker, please share your tips for keeping that silly crust in its place, and get me out of this recurring jam!!!

Thanks!

What A Doll!

Blogging is kind of like shopping.

If you are a shopper, like me, then you know how easy it is to walk into a store and see all kinds of things you did not know you needed or wanted before you stepped in.

Same with Blogland!

I was simply reading a happy blog, when she mentioned dolls. I love dolls, but haven't owned one for a very long time. So... sew... oh, no! One more project. LOL

The doll in the top picture came from Vintagericrac. She sells her patterns on Etsy... and I bought one! Can't wait to create a doll for all the holidays! (She also has BOY doll patterns; cute!) With clothes that you can change!

I am dreaming about little outfits that match the seasons... and letting her be the Queen of this shelf...

My friend Shannon came over and spent the day with me yesterday, and she falled-up that shelf up for me. (I won't tell you what she said about the accumulation of ten years' worth of dust!)

What a doll!

Your support, my blog friendys, has been great!

Choose Life!

First off (before I teach you how to make the birthday pillowcase, at the bottom of this blog), thank you for all the prayers, comments, and emails. I appreciate you!

My husband and I have decided that if we ever get deathly sick, it's off to Mercy Hospital in Idaho that we will go. We've never seen such care, where the doctors have regular meetings with the family, often over 30 minutes! Unheard of in my neck of the woods, where the doctor is talking to you, but has one hand on the door knob.

We know Dotty had the greatest chance for recovery in this ICU. Still, after all this time, they will take her off the respirator tomorrow. They do not think she will make it, as she has only gotten worse, with no improvements of any kind.

With lots of free time over there, I read a book by a journalist who decided to uproot her life and live out her dream of graduating from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. That choice caused her enthusiasm for daily living to flourish. This is what I want, to make choices that cause my heart, mind and soul to blossom in the blessings and trials the Lord gives; it's so easy to waste our minutes in discontentment or pity-parties - or even unforgiveness - isn't it? It gives real meaning to "This is the day the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it" Psalm 118:24.

So today, while I'm thinking about death, I'm also dwelling on life. Thanksgiving is coming up, and that means family and friends and gatherings. I want to enjoy every second of planning for the bustle. There are too many joys these next holiday months to not grasp them with thankfulness.

I will rejoice.

A choice.

My husband's sister chose to live without all of the above for the last 20 years. She lived alone, ignoring almost everyone, including her two sons. Sad. It could have been so different.

Our daily choices can embrace joy or shove it away...

Last week, I told you that when it wasn't my birthday I would teach you how to make this ~

I sewed this one as a Birthday pillowcase. They make great gifts! My linen closet is full of ones for other holidays, as well as just cute ones for everyday. At first this might seam hard and complicated (because the French seam process seems backwards), but once you sew one, all others will only take you about 30-45 minutes, start-to-finish.

The special thing about this pillowcase is that no raw edges show on the inside. Here's how you make it...

For one standard pillowcase:
Cut...
  • Main fabric - 27" x 41" ~ I used birthday fabric. (If using fabric with words or patterns on it, cut the width 27" with the words showing how they do above, and the length the 41".)
  • Cuff fabric - 10" x 41"~ I used green dotted.
  • Trim fabric - 3" x 41" ~ I used white with black dots. (If you are going to ruffle the trim, then you will want to double the length.)
Next...
  1. Fold the trim fabric in half lengthwise, wrong sides together; press. (If you are going to ruffle the trim, do it now.)
  2. Layer all three fabrics, RIGHT SIDE UP, in this order: Cuff (on bottom), main (in middle), trim (on top), raw edges even.
  3. At the top, pin all these layers together.
  4. Take the bottom of the main fabric and roll it till it comes above the bottom edge of the cuff fabric.
  5. Bring the bottom edge of the cuff fabric up to the pinned top layers, and re-pin. It will look like a tube.

  6. Sew the pinned layers together using 1/4" seam, leaving side edges open (not sewn).
  7. Grab the inside and pull the right side out. (See, no raw edges showing on that cuff!)

  8. Fold it in half, wrong sides together, and press it flat.
  9. With wrong sides still together, though it seems backwards, sew the open side and bottom edges with a 1/4" seam.
  10. Turn WRONG SIDE out; press.
  11. With wrong sides still out, pin the bottom and one side that you just sewed and stitch a 3/8" seam.
  12. Turn right sides out - TA-DONE! (I did not have enough fabric to have the birthday words showing the way I like, so had to cut it the opposite of what I instructed you.)
  13. Rejoice that you have family and friends to sew gifts for!!!!
Choose life!
